The win at Bryan Multi-Sport Complex left the Explosion with a 5-1-2 mark, second only to Jacksonville Area Soccer Association Coastal Surge (6-0-1). The runner-up finish put the Explosion in the Kepner Cup tournament, starting this weekend in Greensboro.

She provided the helper to Taylor Smith for Wilson’s first goal in the 23rd minute and then finished a pass from Madelyn Ellis in the 81st minute. In between, Ellis got her first assist on Hannah Mosley’s 44th-minute goal.

Parker Barnes saved all three of Wayne County’s shots in goal for the Explosion, which fired 24 shots.

‘09 EXPLOSION BOYS

The ‘09 Explosion picked up a tie and a win to close out its regular season Oct. 19-20. The 1-1 draw with North Carolina Football Club Navy North and the 4-3 defeat of JASA 09 Coastal Surge left the Explosion at 2-3-2 and in fourth place in the eight-team 11U Boys First Division East.

Rome Roach’s first-half goal accounted for all over Wilson’s scoring versus NCFC Navy North on Saturday, Oct. 19, at WRAL Soccer Complex in Raleigh. However, Explosion goalkeeper Ryan Sherrod round up a whopping 19 saves to make Roach’s goal hold up in the 1-1 draw. The next day, Oct. 20, Collins Pearson popped in a pair of goals while Anthony Hamilton and Braxton Mayo scored one each as the Explosion nipped the host Coastal Surge 4-3 at Woodlands Park in Jacksonville.

Sherrod netted six saves.

Wilson’s goal came in the first half off the foot of Corinne Denham with Chloe Villaverde on the assist. WFC Black improved to 3-2-1.

The previous Sunday, Oct. 20, the Explosion couldn’t hold its 1-0 lead from Mallory Jenkins’ first-half goal off Villaverde’s assist. NCFC White South got the equalizer in the second half at Middle Creek.

‘06 EXPLOSION GIRLS

GREENSBORO — The WYSA ‘06 Explosion suffered back-to-back losses for the first time all season in the U.S. Youth Soccer Regional League Piedmont Conference last weekend at Bryan Park.

The Explosion came up short 2-1 against Charlotte Soccer Association North on Saturday, Oct. 26. Wilson’s lone goal came from Avery Williams, who punched in the rebound of a shot by teammate Mariah Polk.

On Sunday, Oct. 27, Piedmont leader CSA South delivered a 3-0 defeat to the Explosion. The loss dropped WYSA (6-3-0) below CSA North (7-2-0) and into third place in the Piedmont. At 9-0-0, Charlotte South is two games ahead of CSA North.

“This weekend was a challenge for our girls,” said Wilson head coach Thomas Goines. “It has been a while since they have had a losing weekend. However, they played two very good teams and each match was evenly fought. We just came out on the wrong side of the score lines.”

The Explosion goes back to work this weekend at Southeast Freight Lines Soccer Center in Columbia, South Carolina, taking on Inter Atlanta FC Blues on Saturday and Roswell (Georgia) SC Santos Blue on Sunday.
